Sunday School Assistant

Job Overview

As an expression of its mission to be a vibrant and inclusive community of faith, Pittsburgh Mennonite Church is dedicated to the nurture of children in its worship and community life.  Part of this expression is hiring excellent staff to assist with children during Sunday School, ensuring a caring and safe environment for the kids and so parents may attend worship and Sunday School more frequently.  To accomplish this goal, the Sunday School Assistant will:

  • Assist the lead Sunday School volunteer in teaching, caring for, and managing children five through eight in the Loft classroom space during worship services

  • Assist with games and snack for children 10 and under during Second Hour (education hour for adults) after the Sunday Worship Service

  • Work from 9:45 am to 12:45 pm on Sunday mornings about 3 Sundays a month, and 9:45 am to 11:15 am about one Sunday a month

 

Notes

  • Sunday School Assistant will report to the Children and Youth Education Committee Chair or other representative.

  • All staff are supported and overseen by Church Council or designated representatives in a Human Resources capacity (evaluations, onboarding, etc.)

 

Specific Tasks

  • Arrive at 9:45 to set up the Loft classroom space with the Sunday School volunteer lead, including setting up activities and going over any special instructions for that day.

  • Be in the sanctuary to walk children to the Loft at approximately 10:20 after Children’s Time

  • Redirect behaviors as needed while the lead volunteer is presenting the lesson and activities

  • Move from Loft to Fellowship Hall after Worship to receive children there

  • Follow all Child Safety Protocols including behavior management practices, and supervising the children as they re-enter the sanctuary and rejoin their parents/caregivers 

  • Coordinate with Children and Youth Education Committee liaison.

 

Requirements

  • Up-to-date Pennsylvania Child Abuse History and State Police Criminal History Clearances filed in the PMC Office as well as FBI background check clearance if applicant has been in Pennsylvania less than 10 years prior

  • Experience in Childcare and/or Teaching, especially with classroom management

  • Comfort working in LGBTQ+ affirming religious contexts

  • Ability to work cheerfully with numerous parents and volunteers

  • Commitment to child welfare and safety. In particular, willingness to learn PMC’s child safety policies and ensure they are followed.

  • Nice-to-have: specific training or experience with children with special needs, including, but not limited to, neurodivergence (autism, ADHD, etc.) and PTSD.

 

Compensation: $20/hr at 1.5 - 3 hrs per week on Sunday mornings.

Nursery Staff

Job Overview

As an expression of its mission to be a vibrant and inclusive community of faith, Pittsburgh Mennonite Church is dedicated to the nurture of children in its worship and community life.  Part of this expression is hiring excellent staff to oversee children in the Nursery, ensuring a caring and safe environment for the kids and so parents may attend worship and Sunday School more frequently.  To accomplish this goal, two nursery staff persons will work together to:

  • Facilitate play, care for and manage children five and under in the PMC nursery during worship services

  • Oversee games and snack for children ten and under during Second Hour after the Sunday Worship Service

  • Work from 9:45 am to 12:45 pm on Sunday mornings about 3 Sundays a month, and 9:45 am to 11:15 am about one Sunday a month
