With the weather cooling off, we will resume our normal Sunday schedule starting on August 27, meeting in the Sanctuary, with the prelude beginning at 10:15 and worship starting at 10:30. This Sunday is the Blessing of the Backpacks, when we invite students of all ages to participate in a special blessing to start off the school year, and it is also Pastor Dave Swanson’s first Sunday back at PMC since returning from his sabbatical. Please join us! (Sunday School will resume in September.)
This Sunday is the final week we will be meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 for summer worship. On August 27 we will return to the sanctuary and our normal worship time of 10:30. The 27th is also Dave’s first Sunday back from sabbatical and the Blessing of the Backpacks.
This Sunday, Lisa Sayre’s sermon, On a Covert Message from Jesus, will consider issues of justice and humility, drawing on Psalm 138, Isaiah 51:1-6, Romans 12:1-8, and Matthew 16:13-20.
The Commissions are taking turns setting up and taking down while we meet downstairs. A list of things that need to be done is posted on the door of the chair storage room. This week is Mission/Service, Education, and Pastoral Team. Thanks to everyone who has helped our summer worship service to run smoothly!
While Dave is on sabbatical, you are encouraged to reach out to a member of Pastoral Team for any care and questions you have. Each team member has been taking a turn as the main point-person throughout the summer. Please contact Alisha Rinefierd through August 26.
The Allegheny Mennonite Conference Leadership Council is asking that people consider an appeal concerning our conference minister, Dave Mishler. Dave will be undergoing two cataract surgeries in the coming weeks that will require special lenses due to astigmatism. While his health plan covers the surgical procedures, it does not cover the lenses, which cost $1,000 each.Becky Mishler (Dave’s spouse) received a cancer diagnosis earlier this year, and expenses related to her surgery and treatments have depleted their Health Savings Account. Any financial assistance would be appreciated. If contributions exceed medical expense, the surplus will be directed to our AMC operating expenses. Contributions can be sent to the AMC office, with the designation of “lens fund.” The mailing address for the office is Allegheny Mennonite Conference, PO Box 742, Davidsville, PA 15928.
Have Car, Will Travel: If you live in the Swissvale, Wilkinsburg, or general East End area, please consider offering rides to folks who regularly come to church. Pastoral Team is looking to get enough volunteers so this doesn’t have to be a weekly (or even bi-weekly) commitment for anybody. Please talk to or email Ray Ramos (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Alisha Rinefierd (email@example.com)
- If you are able to provide a meal but can’t deliver it, please contact Kathleen Good, who will set up delivery.
- You also might consider bringing frozen meals to the church at your convenience, which we can deliver as needed.
- We are planning to have a group meal prep day soon, similar to what some people did on Service Sunday.
- As always, you can sign up to provide a dinner at takethemameal.com by looking up their names and using the following passwords:
- Karen and Bryan McCarthy welcomed their daughter, Lenora Mae, last Tuesday. (Password: karen/bryan)

- Kirstin and Tyler Swenson have a new son, Otto. Because they live in Ligonier, please bring meals to church through August 27 and we will arrange to have them delivered or send them home with Dianne and Kim Miller, Otto’s grandparents.
Quilt knotting this weekend: Please stop by the Fellowship Hall this Saturday, August 19, to help to knot quilts that are being sent to Mennonite Central Committee. No experience is needed and coffee and lunch will be provided! We will be working from 9:00-3:00. Come for as long as you can! After church on Sunday, there may be knotting to finish. In particular, help in moving the quilt frames back to the quilt room after worship would be greatly appreciated.
