YUIR Summer Kick-Off will take place at The Shop in Homewood (621 N Dallas) June 27-29, from 10-4 each day. This 3-day anti-racism training is free; snacks and lunch will be provided each day.
The morning activities will focus on building a shared anti-racist analysis asking the question Why are people poor? and looking at the history of race and racism in this country. Participants will also examine Internalized Racial Oppression and how that affects our organizing. A big focus will be the School to Prison Pipeline and understanding why and how students of color are targeted to end up in the criminal justice system. The afternoon activities will be arts and culture related. We plan to have an open mic and hands-on arts activities, and we welcome youth to bring their creative genius and skills to share.
If possible, youth are asked to register online, although participants are welcome to show up even if they haven’t already registered.
